Momentum Wind At-a-Glance

  • Approximately 800 MW of offshore wind energy, which is enough clean energy to power over 250,000 Maryland homes.
  • Up to 55 turbines located more than 15 miles from shore.
  • Operational life expectancy of more than 25 years.
  • Will support more than 3,600 Maryland jobs. US Wind is committed to using union labor and minority businesses to fill many of these positions.
  • Will facilitate the investment of an incremental $150 million in a new monopile fabrication factory at Sparrows Point.

Introducing Momentum Wind – US Wind’s ambitious new offshore wind project.

In addition to building MarWin, Maryland’s first offshore wind project approved by the state in 2017, US Wind now also plans to develop Momentum Wind, a new 808 MW offshore wind project that will be located in federal waters far off the coast of Maryland. When taken together, the two projects will deliver 1,100 MW of clean energy to the grid, powering more than 340,000 homes with offshore wind energy. Momentum Wind will secure a major role for Maryland in the rapidly growing U.S. offshore wind industry by establishing the state’s first permanent offshore wind component factory – Sparrows Point Steel – to serve the entire U.S. market. Taking advantage of Maryland’s unique industrial port assets in Baltimore, Momentum Wind will build on US Wind’s already planned $77 million in investments in port infrastructure associated with the MarWin project. By facilitating the investment of an incremental $150 million in a new monopile fabrication factory at Sparrows Point, Momentum Wind can increase Maryland GDP by $6.9 billion over 20 years, while Sparrows Point Steel can create 500 full-time, permanent jobs in steel component manufacturing when the facility is at full capacity. Maryland jobs at Momentum Wind and Sparrows Point Steel will largely be filled by members of local unions and minority businesses.

Major Progress on Maryland’s Clean Energy and Carbon Reduction Goals

Momentum Wind will be able to advance significantly the state’s offshore wind energy goals while meeting the state’s stringent ratepayer impact safeguards. The project will also make substantial progress toward meeting Maryland’s renewable energy goal of 50% of energy sales by 2030. Further, an operational offshore wind farm produces negligible air emissions of pollutants and carbon dioxide (from vessel operations), resulting in major health, air quality, environmental justice, and carbon reduction benefits. Because of the scale allowed offshore, this is an unprecedented opportunity for Maryland to take a major step forward in fulfilling its clean energy and carbon reduction targets at pricing that fully satisfies the ratepayer impact tests established by Maryland law.

Further, Momentum Wind is making unmatched commitments to hiring Maryland minority-owned and small businesses. US Wind has assembled an unmatched Maryland team of highly experienced and accomplished business development professionals dedicated to building a supply chain of minority and small businesses. US Wind has put forth a comprehensive program to develop local talent through innovative small business incubator and mentorship programs, which will encompass a full and inclusive program to help Maryland MBEs and small businesses thrive in the offshore wind industry.

Creating Thousands of Jobs for Maryland

Momentum Wind can support thousands of Maryland jobs and lead directly to the investment of hundreds of millions of dollars in the Maryland economy. Through the development, construction, and operations phases of Momentum Wind, the projected economic benefits to the Maryland economy are massive (see table).
