US Wind Proposes Largest-Ever Renewable Energy Project to Maryland
Company’s application to the Public Service Commission fills out federal lease area and doubles down on local jobs
On July 30, 2024, US Wind filed an application with the Maryland Public Service Commission in accordance with a new state law that would increase the total capacity of the Company’s offshore wind portfolio by more than 600 megawatts (“MW”), for a total of 1,710 MW, while remaining under the statutory ratepayer protection caps. With this application, US Wind also recommits to establishing Maryland’s first offshore wind factory – Sparrows Point Steel – in Baltimore County and facilitates the development of Maryland’s first offshore wind cable manufacturing facility in Baltimore City, Hellenic Cables.
In total, US Wind’s application seeks the authority to sell 6,966,836 megawatt hours of offshore wind energy to Maryland annually, supporting the 1,710 MW build-out of the Company’s entire federal lease area, with 840 MW proposed for OREC Round 1 and 870 MW proposed for OREC Round 2. US Wind’s application proposes to deliver nearly all of the ORECs previously awarded by the Commission in the previous two OREC Rounds, providing a critical foundation for Maryland to achieve its 8.5 GW goal.
