Transforming the U.S. energy market with offshore wind

 In blog

The offshore wind industry is booming, with record-breaking climate action from many states, as well as U.S. territory Puerto Rico, and high rates of job creation among others. The renewable energy at large continues to move towards the right direction, in the country and in the rest of the world.

Efforts to develop a comprehensive wind energy infrastructure in the U.S. have earned favorable support from many communities in different states like New Jersey and Maryland. The country has an enormous untapped natural resource that can transform not just the U.S. but the global energy market if harnessed properly.

According to a research from Northwestern University Civil and Environmental Engineering Professor Jerome Hajjar and his colleagues, “the coastal waters just off the country’s eastern seaboard are ripe with potential for wind farm development,” and believes the East Coast has “supreme wind conditions” in both shallow and deep water, which can position it as a global leader in wind energy production—particularly Massachusetts, which has “shallow water further from the coast than other states,” considered as “prime real estate” for ocean wind turbines.

The U.S. has a long way to go when it comes to offshore wind development, but we’ve been making strides to get there. We must remain fiercely committed and continue to push for transformative policies on both federal and state levels, and do everything we can to generate electricity as much as possible from natural and domestic resources, strengthening our economy and diversifying our domestic energy portfolio.
